Aquaculture on the High Seas

Travel responsibly and sustainably

With an endless array of breathtaking landscapes and fresh produce, the Magdalen Islands are the stuff of which dreams are made. The archipelago owes its reputation to the sea and its bountiful resources. As a case in point, the company Les Cultures du large is one of the leading pioneers in the art of mussel and oyster farming (high-seas aquaculture).

The aquaculture site is located seven kilometres off the coast of the Islands

Les Cultures du large is the only company in North America that specializes in high-seas aquaculture; this technique lends a unique taste that recalls ocean freshness while offering a subtle yet well-balanced saltiness.

Located on Chemin du Quai in the Pointe-Basse township, the company offers a range of freshly harvested shellfish. Visitors seeking an authentic experience are strongly encouraged to sample their selections on the nearby beach for an honest-to-goodness Magdalen Islands picnic! To satisfy your curiosity, the staff at the on-site interpretation centre will be happy to reveal some of the secrets of deep-seas aquaculture, in addition to answering any questions you may have.

And if you're feeling particularly daring, you can put on your rubber boots and set off with ship's captain Christian Vigneau to explore the aquaculture site itself, for an authentic immersive experience.

While visiting Havre-aux-Maisons, be sure to check out our other regional delicacies. For example, La Fromagerie du Pied-de-Vent (cheese) and Le Fumoir d'Antan (smoked fish) are just a stone's throw from Les Cultures du large. Cap off your day by stopping by Le Barbocheux (fruit-based liqueurs) and Miel en Mer (honey) for a gourmet-worthy experience filled with brand-new discoveries!

Once you've tasted these exquisite products, you may never be able to live without them again! Not to worry: they're available all over the archipelago. And when you return home, you may even be able to get your hands on some Trésor du large oysters—a delicious reminder of your trip to the Magdalen Islands!
