For boat travel to the Îles de la Madeleine, there are several possibilities. There is a daily ferry service to the Islands from the town of Souris on Prince Edward Island. Please note that this service is now available year-round. There is also a weekly ferry-cruise that can be taken from Montreal or from Chandler, in the Gaspé Peninsula.

Entry Island is the only inhabited island in the archipelago which cannot be reached by road. There is a daily ferry service to and from this island.

Several different cruise companies now include the Îles de la Madeleine on their Canada/New England cruise itinerary.

As a port of call, the popularity of the Îles de la Madeleine has been on the rise since the 80s. Cruise ships have been visiting Cap-aux-Meules regularly since 2000. The year 2003 was particularly noteworthy because several cruise ships visited the port: the Levant, the Polar Star and the Prinsendam from the Holland America Line. In 2004, Europa's name was added to the list of cruise ships visiting the Islands.

Several groups and individuals have collaborated to develop the cruise market in the archipelago: Tourisme Îles de la Madeleine, the Chamber of Commerce of the Îles-de-la-Madeleine, the regional municipality, Transport Canada, Développement Tourisme Conseils and the Groupe CTMA united their efforts to promote the Islands as a port of call and improve the hospitality structures for passengers. Tourisme Îles de la Madeleine is a member of the Association des croisières du Saint-Laurent, and Québec Maritime; they also work in close collaboration with various ports in the Atlantic Provinces.

The port of Cap-aux-Meules meets all the requirements to respect the new international standards of security (ISPS).
