Cruises

The Îles de la Madeleine have been an established port of call since the 80s.  Cruise ships have been coming into Cap-aux-Meules regularly over the last ten years. 2003 was a banner year that saw several cruise ships coming into port, including the Levant, the Polar Star and the Holland America Line's Prinsendam. In 2004, the Europa joined the list of cruise ships that have visited the Islands.

Sitting out in the centre of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the Magdalen Islands on the Canada-New England shipping lane. This includes ports in Atlantic Canada (Halifax in Nova Scotia, Charlottetown in Prince Edward Island, St. John's in Newfoundland and Saint John in New Brunswick) and ports along the Saint Lawrence River (including Québec and Montréal) as well as the north-eastern part of the United States and the Saint-Pierre-and-Miquelon archipelago.

The cruise market was developed in the archipelago with the aid and collaboration of several stakeholders.  Tourisme Îles de la Madeleine, the Chambre de Commerce des Îles, the Municipalité des Îles, Transport Canada, Développement Tourisme Conseils and the Groupe C.T.M.A. formed a partnership to help develop and promote the destination as a port of call and improve passenger services and amenities.  As a member of the Association des croisières du Saint-Laurent, and Québec Maritime, Tourisme Îles de la Madeleine works closely with a number of different ports in Atlantic Canada.
