Classification of tourist accommodations
The Law and the Regulation governing tourist accommodation establishments, adopted respectively in June 2000 and December 2001, require that all operators of lodgings for tourists :
- have an official certificate of classification;
- display at all times, outside the building, in full view of the public, the sign attesting to the fact that they are officially classified (see signs below)
This official classification replaces the operating license required before the adoption of this law. It is valid for 24 months (48 months for teaching establishments).
In 2001, the minister responsible for tourism gave the Corporation de l'Industrie Touristique du Québec (C.I.T.Q.) a mandate to classify seven categories of accommodations as defined in the Law and the Regulation.
Under the terms of this agreement, the CITQ is committed to the following :
- create classification tables appropriate for each category included in its mandate ;
- visit and classify the establishments included in its mandates once every two years, except for teaching establishments, which will be visited once every four years.
