If you are driving to the Îles de la Madeleine, you go first to Souris (Prince Edward Island), where you can get a ferry to the Islands. The ferry trip from Souris to Cap-aux-Meules takes 5 hours. This ferry service is operational year-round. Remember that the Îles de la Madeleine are in the Atlantic time zone, one hour later than mainland Québec.

From Montreal or Quebec

Take Highway 20 to Rivière-du-Loup. From Rivière-du-Loup to Moncton (New Brunswick), there are two possible routes:

Through the Matapedia Valley

Take Route 132 until you get to Matapedia, then continue on to Pointe-à-la-Croix where you can cross the bridge to New Brunswick and take Route 11 from Campbellton until you reach Bathurst, then Route 8 to Miramichi, and then again Route 11 to Shediac (Campbellton-Shediac: 286 km). Take note that this itinerary is the longest.
Through Edmundston

Take Route 185 (QC), then Highway 2 (N.B.) to Edmundston, then to Moncton. Take Highway 15 to Shediac (Edmundston-Shediac: 502 km). Take note that this itinerary is the shortest.

From Shediac, you can reach Cape Tormentine along Highway 15, then follow Highway 16 to take the Confederation Bridge to Borden, Prince Edward Island.

From Borden, follow Highway 1 to Charlottetown and then Highway 2 to Souris. The ferry crossing to the Îles de la Madeleine on the N.M. Madeleine (CTMA) takes 5 hours.

From Halifax

There are two different routes you can take from Halifax to Souris on Prince Edward Island. The travel time is the same for both, but your car will run more kilometers over the first route, whereas the second has fewer road miles and includes a ferry ride.

Alternative 1 : via the Confederation Bridge

By road, going through New Brunswick and over the Confederation Bridge: Follow Highway 102 North to Truro, then take Highway 104 West (Trans-Canada Highway) towards Amherst. In New Brunswick, Highway 104 turns into Highway 2 West. When you come to Aulac, take exit 513B towards Highway16 North. At the traffic circle, follow the signs for Prince Edward Island and the Confederation Bridge at Cape Jourimain and stay on Highway 16 to get on the bridge to Borden on Prince Edward Island. Highway 16 turns into Highway 1 after the bridge.

From Borden, follow Highway 1 to Charlottetown and then Highway 2 to Souris. The ferry crossing to the Îles de la Madeleine on the N.M. Madeleine (CTMA) takes 5 hours.
Alternative 2 : via Northumberland Ferries

By road, using the ferry service between Caribou (Nova Scotia) and Wood Island (Prince Edward Island) : Take Highway 102 NORTH to Truro. At Exit 15, follow Highway 104 EAST (Trans-Canada Highway) towards Cape Breton as far as Exit 22. Then take Highway 106 NORTH (Trans-Canada Highway) as far as the Northumberland ferry terminal at Caribou. Take the ferry going to Wood Island (Prince Edward Island - crossing time 1 hr. 15 mins.).

From Wood Island, you follow the signs leading to Highway 18 (Shore Road) and then Highway 4 (St. Mary's Road), which leads to the villages of Murray River, Montague and Cardigan. When you reach Dingwell's Mills, follow Highway 2 leading to Souris. The ferry crossing to the Îles de la Madeleine on the N.M. Madeleine (CTMA) takes 5 hours.

From Boston

There are two possible routes you can take from Boston to Souris on Prince Edward Island :

Alternative 1 : via Highway I-95 and the Confederation Bridge

By road, going through New Hampshire, Maine, New Brunswick, and over the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island : From Boston, take I-95 North to New Hampshire and then Maine. Near Portland, take Exit 44 leading to I-295 North, then follow the signs leading to South Portland and Downtown Portland. Stay on this road until it rejoins the I-95. Then follow I-95 North towards Houlton, the last American town before you come to the Canadian Customs. Once you have passed the Customs, I-95 North turns into Highway 95 East to Woodstock. Then head to Moncton along Highway 2 East (Trans-Canada Highway) towards Fredericton, then towards Moncton. From Moncton, take Exit 467B, leading to Highway 11 North towards Shediac.

When you get to Shediac, follow the signs for Highway 15 East leading to Cape Jourimain along Highway 15 and then 16, which takes you over the Confederation Bridge to Borden on Prince Edward Island. On the other side of the bridge, Highway 16 turns into Highway 1.

From Borden, follow Highway 1 to Charlottetown and then Highway 2 to Souris. The ferry crossing to the Îles de la Madeleine on the N.M. Madeleine (CTMA) takes 5 hours.
Alternative 2 : on the "Cat" ferry

By road, going through New Hampshire, Maine, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, using the ferry services between Portland (Maine) and Yarmouth (Nova Scotia) and between Caribou (Nova Scotia) and Wood Island (Prince Edward Island) : From Boston, take I-95 North to New Hampshire and into Maine. Near Portland, take Exit 44 leading to I-295 North and follow the signs leading to South Portland and Downtown Portland. Stay on this road until you come to Route 1A and Commercial Street, which leads to the port in Portland. Take the "Cat" ferry towards Yarmouth (crossing time 5 hrs. 30 mins.).

From Yarmouth, take Highway 101, following the signs for Halifax. A little way past the town of Upper Sackville, take the exit leading to the airport, Highway 102 and the town of Bedford. Carry on for about 1 km and take the exit leading to Highway 102 North to Truro. At Exit 15, follow Highway 104 East (Trans-Canada Highway) towards Cape Breton until you get to Exit 22. From there, take Highway 106 North (Trans-Canada Highway) to the Northumberland ferry terminal at Caribou. Take the ferry going to Wood Island (Prince Edward Island - crossing time 1 hr. 15 mins.).

Confederation Bridge

The toll on the Confederation Bridge varies according to the type of vehicle and is collected only on leaving P.E.I. (ex.: 2007 summer rate, $40,75 for a family car).
