During the last century, many Islanders lived to the rhythm of hard-smoking herrings. Enjoy an educational and taste experience in a historical building. Discover the operation of the smokehouse, the daily lives of the workets, the smell of the fires ans the sight of thousands of coppery herrings that are being suspendued and smoked. The Arseneau family keeps this expertise alive since 1942. During the summer , guided tour every hours including tasting products. In low season , independent visits with interpretation board and tasting.
During the summer, accompanied by a guide, you will go through a three-step experience.
1 - Inside an old smokehouse, you will learn more about the fishing of herring and the various steps in the preparation of smoked fish. You will experience the daily actions of hundreds of Madelinots who worked in this industry.
2 - You will be amazed at the sight of thousands of copper-colored herring hanging inside the smokehouses and by the pleasant odor of smoked fish.
3 - You will come back to the store for the presentation of a short video and a tasting of smoked products.
